A Few Days Before the Big Day

Well, here goes, first blog ever as I feel the need to jot down some things as we get closer to Matthew's rotationplasty surgery. Let's go back in time to see how we got here. Matthew was born January 30, 2011. We had known since an ultrasound a few months prior that he was missing most or all of his right femur. Despite my wife Barb being an RN and me being an MRI tech, we were extremely unfamiliar with what we came to know was proximal femoral focal deficiency or PFFD.

Six months later we had an appointment with Dr. Shawn Standard at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. Fortunately for us we live in the Baltimore area and Sinai is one of the top places to go for PFFD. Several options were discussed including lengthening, amputation, and rotationplasty. Leg lengthening was immediately discounted because Matthew's leg length discrepancy as an adult would be too much. Rotationplasty was believed the best option because his foot and ankle were stable.

Happy New Year 2014!

Fast forward to today and we are gearing up for rotationplasty surgery on Wednesday, January 22nd. Matthew had his labs done earlier this week and we have a pre-op appointment on Monday. In the meantime, it's time to go outside and play!
